Bahamas Football

Over the last few centuries the sport of football has greatly become popular. Groups like the Federation Internationale de Football Association, or FIFA, have helped to spread the popularity of the sport to many different countries. The Bahamas are among the places that have been influenced by the sport. However, Bahamas football is just something that has become popular in recent times.

Sports in the Bahamas as a whole was not that big until the early part of the twentieth century. During the 1920s and 1930s there were football clubs that began playing the game on the island of New Providence. There were all sorts of clubs, most notably Scouts, St. George and St. Michael, that began playing here. These clubs would also play games with groups from naval ships from other countries and other recreation ships that docked at Nassau. Most of the games here were played during the Eastern Parade.

In the 1940s football truly began to be popular. The Boxing Day Soccer Classic was formed for competition for all of the football clubs in the country. The Vikings and St. Georges were the most popular teams in the game at this time.

In 1954 sports in the Bahamas took a turn into more popularity as a league for football teams was formed. The Bahamas Football Amateur Association, which was formed by English businessman Brian Andrews, had several ten man teams that played matches on Sundays at the Park Clifford. The league would have some additional team as time went on.

The first major match that took place involves a team from the Bahamas came in 1957. A team of all-star players from the country played in a major trophy match against the Coral Gables Soccer Club.

With more international games involved the Bahamas Football Association was formed. This was for the intention of representing the country in international matches. The group would get its full affiliation with FIFA not long after that.

The BFA also joined the Confederation of North, Caribbean and Central America Association of Football. The group joined this league in 1981. This was used especially for representation in local matches.

Bahamas Football is another of the notable groups for the sport in the country. It works in the creation of leagues in numerous islands around the area. It also helps to educate people about the game, including information for not only players but also for coaches and officials.

Sports in the Bahamas have grown in popularity over the years, and Bahamas football is just one of the best examples. With all of the groups involved in the sport around the country it can be seen here that the sport is indeed popular and is continuing to grow in not only the Bahamas but also in other countries in the area.
