Some newer models allow for on-the-fly four wheel drive where the four wheel drive is created when it is needed.

Shaft is the last option to use here. There are drive, chain or belt drives to choose from. A shaft drive needs less maintenance and can work on all terrains. Chain and belt drives could easily be snapped.
